Manneken-Pis, meaning "the little man [who] pisses" in Dutch, is a fountain in the form of a bronze statue 55.5 centimeters high1,2 (61 cm with the base3) which represents a little boy naked urinating. It is located in the heart of Brussels, a stone's throw from the Grand-Place, at the intersection of rue de l'Étuve and rue du Chêne. Since 1965, the statuette present on site has been an identical copy of the one designed in 1619-1620 which is carefully preserved at the Museum of the City of Brussels4 located in the Maison du Roi. Manneken-Pis is the most famous symbol of the people of Brussels, he also personifies their sense of humor (zwanze in Brussels) and their independence of mind.
